Modern Skirts Bring Modern Touch to Classic Americana Music

In my usual perusal of what's coming up at local Philly venues, I noticed Modern Skirts are pointing their compass my way. I had a huge crush on these guys in '06-early'07 but never had a chance to see the band perform live. So what do they sound like? Most people will say Beach Boys. But take a listen to their newest single "Four More years" and you'll hear more Monkees than Beach Boys. I can easily envision Modern Skirts taking the stage on the Ed Sullivan show, bobbing their heads in unison, ala "That Thing You Do".

While "Four More Years" may be their single, touching on 60's pop instrumentals and classic Americana lyrics, "Pasadena" is by far my favorite. Touches of New Pornographers as well as Band of Horses comes immediately to mind. The singer's voice soars over the music like Jim James of My Morning Jacket, with just enough build-up to satisfy the listener. Their video for "Pasadena" has gotten great exposure on MTVU, Yahoo! Music, and Much Music.

Modern Skirts will be playing The Khyber on Friday, March 7th with who of all people you ask? The prevailing Philly favorite, Drink Up Buttercup. Getcha Popcorn ready, this is going to be a good one.

If you don't know now you know,
-Josh
