VIDEO: Kanye West - "Monster"

A nearly finished version of Kanye's video for "Monster" has officially leaked. The video features Rick Ross, Jay-Z, two versions of Nicki Minaj, and several models in various states of deadness and eating entrails. So yeah, enjoy!

Keep in mind that this video is unfinished, so it may change.

NEW: M.I.A. Mixtape "ViCKi LEEKX"

We all knew it was coming, and boy am I glad it's finally here! Will this make up for some of the disappointment that was her last album? Let's hope so. I haven't listened to any of it yet, but my hopes are high. Head to this website for the download FO' FREE.

FREE: The Black Keys vs. Big Boi "The Brothers of Chico Dusty"

As you're all probably aware of, I'm a huge fan of mashups. Whether it's Girl Talk doing his thing, Wait What giving us Drake over Crystal Castles, or any bedroom DJ throwing Jay-Z vocals over any (literally ANY) rock song, I'm a sucker and will listen to all of it. And love it.

The Brothers of Chico Dusty takes things to another level. Two of the biggest albums of the year mashed together with flawless production. The Black Keys' Brothers and Big Boi's Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty both made The Whipping Post's Top 25 albums of 2010 and will most definitely make appearances during my NYE festivities, but what I love about this mashup is the draw it has among music fans who would otherwise never listen to one of these respected albums. A strict hip-hop fan can listen to Big Boi's pristine flow and open his or her ears to some instrumentals from a band they wouldn't consider listening to until now, and vise versa. It opens doors and invites you into a whole other world of music. I can't even begin to list the number of artists I used to discover through listening to mashups.

On another note, can we agree to take one of the top hip hop and rock albums and bring them together like this every year? Someone get on this, maybe the creator of this album, Wick-it, can continue his success.

Congress Passes Local Community Radio Act

A significant bill was passed by both the House and Senate last week: the Local Community Radio Act. This legislation allows for the creation of new non-commercial stations on American airwaves-- a number that could reach to the hundreds or even thousands. In a press release, the Future of Music Coalition said, "The addition of more Low Power FM (LPFM) stations will increase local civic engagement, diversify the airwaves, support local music and culture, assist during emergencies, expand religious expression, and provide a platform for the voices of underrepresented communities to be heard."

The Bill states that these stations must be FCC-approved "based on the needs of the local community." There is also built-in protection for "full-power FM stations that are licensed in significantly populated States with more than 3,000,000 housing units and a population density greater than 1,000 per square mile," so low-power stations may be more difficult to acquire in those areas.

More than 500 LPFM stations have been given the green-light since 2001. According to the bill, "These stations are currently on the air and are run by local government agencies, groups promoting arts and education to immigrant and indigenous peoples, artists, schools, religious organizations, environmental groups, organizations promoting literacy, and many other civically oriented organizations." With the passing of this bill, we can now expect many more of these LPFM stations to proliferate.

This is a major victory for those aspiring to become community broadcasters, and an extremely exciting development for community-driven radio nationwide.

VIDEO: SNL's Lonely Island Feat. Akon - "I Just Had Sex"

The new single/digital short from SNL's Lonely Island. Pure comedic genius with a little help on the track from Akon and cameos from Jessica Alba, Blake Lively, and Johnny McEnroe.

ceo Covers Beyonce - "Halo"

ceo has a brand new 7" out for the song "Illuminata", which you can listen to on our Top 25 List. The B-Side to that 7" is a fantastic cover of Beyonce's "Halo". His distinct vocals, and computerized electro-pop sound really make this one worth listening to.

Two-A-Days: Thee Oh Sees and Body Language

Thee Oh Sees aren't exactly new by our culture's internet music standards, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve a feature. I was picking through YANP the other day and he turned me on to this San Fransisco 4 piece. Twenty seconds in, I thought I was listening to some old Black Keys demo, but then out of nowhere these reverb heavy, 60's psych style vocals come shouting out and it's incredible. I'm getting more of this in my life ASAP. Listen to "Tidal Wave" below:

Thee Oh Sees - "Tidal Wave"

I wish I could hate on Brooklyn but I can't. Too many damn good indie rock dance bands and here comes another one. Body Language produce some seriously danceable grooves and they've been kind enough to give us their EP, Social Studies, FO' FREE! over at their bandcamp. "You Can" has touches or Passion Pit and Savoir Adore, and just listen to how that bass line on "Falling Out" transitions from 70's funky to electronic dance oh so effortlessly. Hopefully these guys make it down to D.C. in the near future. Listen below and grab the EP.

Stream: "I'm Here" Soundtrack

Earlier this year, Spike Jonze released a short film titled I'm Here. It's a love story between two robots and it's pretty amazing if you haven't seen it. Stream the soundtrack below, which features Sleigh Bells, Aminal Collective, Of Montreal, and many other awesome artists.

VIDEO: Royksopp - "The Drug"

In the new video for Royksopp's percolating instrumental "The Drug", three girls in airbrushed t-shirts wander around a skull-strewn apocalyptic landscape. This, naturally, turns into a surreal, hallucinatory, narrative-free horror movie, complete with assault rifles, white wolves, and kids with horribly mutilated faces. So yeah, here it is:

"The Drug" comes from Röyksopp's forthcoming instrumental album Senior, due September 13th.

VIDEO: The Roots - "Dear God 2.0" Featuring Jim James of My Morning Jacket

A decent music video has proven hard to come by these days. Reference all of 2010 thus far. But we've finally been presented with a video that deserves attention. Maybe it's the catchy hook, maybe the meaningful lyrical content, or maybe because Jim James actually came out for the video, but this is easily one I could watch over and over.

NEW: The Gay Blades - "Try To Understand"

The follow up album to The Gay Blades hypeworthy first release, Ghosts, will be available October 5th on Triple Crown Records. The new album, titled Savages, will feature this first single, "Try To Understand".

VIDEO: MGMT "Congratulations"

Well, just like their last video, take whatever you want from the new video for "Congratulations" from MGMT. Hey, at least it's a better song than "Flash Delirium."

They should have just paid this guy for his video, at least it makes sense.

NEW: The Ting Tings - "Hands"

The Ting Tings are back and recruited Calvin Harris to produce their newest song, "Hands", which will be featured on their upcoming album, Massage Kunst. In true Ting Tings fashion, the duo holds on to a simplistic and repetitive formula that made We Started Nothing such a success. However, this time they drop all guitars and live instruments and steer towards the straight electro pop sound. Maybe it's the Calvin Harris influence, but it sounds good.

Antoine Dodson Lands #89 Spot on Hot 100 Charts With "Bed Intruder Song"

All it took was an assault and the attempted rape of his sister for Antoine to score 15 minutes of fame and secure the unintentional comedy ringtone of the year. How many people bought this to make it #86 on the Hot 100? Is the future of the Hot 100 this doomed? In 5 years, will the Hot 100 be comprised of user-generated ringtones and commentary remixes? If Leprechaun in Alabama came out today, it would skyrocket to #1.

"Bed Intruder Song"

And in case you're unfamiliar, here's the original news story that spawned the birth of my ringtone for the next 3 months.

Cee-Lo Green - "Fuck You"

This shit is HOTT! Cee-Lo's soulful voice works perfectly with this old school motown production. Turn those speakers up to 11 and sing along. New album drops October 4th. I don't need the interwebz po' po' on me for this one, so no downloads, just watch the Youtube version below.

VIDEO: Yeasayer - "Madder Red"

Who ever thought that a song as beautiful as "Madder Red" could have a touch of humor to it? Check out the video that features a softer side of Kristen Bell and an oozing sac of fleshy limbs as the leading man in her life. Guardian has the exclusive, so check it out over there.

NEW: Kanye West - "See Me Now" Feat. Beyonce and Charlie Wilson

I promise this is the last Kanye post until his album drops November 16th. That is, unless he hijacks a presidential address to make some obscene announcement. I wouldn't put it past him.

Some classic Kanye here. I've definitely enjoyed everything I've been hearing leading up to Mr. West's new and still untitled album.

Weekend Warriors

The weekend has officially arrived and barring another apocalyptic sky terror like last night, I've got a lot going on.

Friday evening will send me on my first trip to the Jazz in the Garden series at the Sculpture Garden 5:30-8:00. Grab a blanket, bottle of wine, and some good company to watch some sweet jazz guitar. From there, it's off to someplace a little more upbeat. 80's Prom Night at Black Cat, DJ'd by D.C. staple, Lil' E. Grab your best Dumb and Dumber tux and reminisce the sounds of David Bowie, Duran Duran, and Depeche Mode.
Saturday will be an early morning as I head over to Mi Tierra Farmers Market to indulge in some mega cheap cheap hangover cures. Authentic Latin American tacos, empanadas, and pollo guisado made right in front of you for a price you'd expect to pay in Mexico, not downtown D.C.! After stuffing my face, it's time to go a little out of my way and hit FREE SWEETFLOW on 25th and Pennsylvania. They promise more than just free frozen yogurt too, so get there early! A 2pm viewing of Inception (yes, I'm the only person in the world who hasn't seen it yet) will get me out of the debilitating afternoon heat, and dinner at District ChopHouse will end my day.

While I'd like nothing more than to sip mimosas on a Sunday morning and people watch, there's too much going on! U Street Dog Days offers a massive sidewalk sale with HUGE discounts from all the independent boutiques and FREE samples from a ton of restaurants. My weekend finishes off at the American Indian museum, where they will be hosting an Iron Chef Cookoff from 3-5pm. As a culinary reality show junkie, there's no way I can miss out on 2 chefs battling head-to-head for an hour, cooking 6 dishes. While at the museum I'm going to check out the last day of the Brian Jungen exhibit. This stuff is crazy!

Two-A-Days: Eels and The Lonely Forest

I'm getting really excited for this new Eels album. Tomorrow Morning will be released August 24th on E Works. Stereogum premiered the song "Baby Loves Me" the other day, the third song we've been able to sample from the upcoming album. Listen below and check out the video for "Spectacular Girl", which follows a day in the life of a girl playing secretary by day and deadly assassin by night. Eels will be in D.C. September 26th at 9:30 Club.

Eels - "Baby Loves Me"

Download it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lonely Forest hail from the Band of Horses region of the Pacific Northwest and you can easily sense the influence. Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla scooped the band up for his new label, Trans, and also produced, engineered, and mixed the their debut EP due out September 14th, with a full length to follow. The Lonely Forest will be in D.C. on October 1st at Black Cat.

The Kanye Promotion Bus Keeps On A Rollin'

First Kanye gave an a cappella performance to a room full of Facebook staffers, then went and did the same thing over at Twitter a few days later. Well now he's posted what he's not calling a video, but will call a live "portrait" or "painting". Leave it to Kanye to put a twist on a minute and a half teaser clip.

To kanye's credit, the video is shot extremely well and leaves me wanting more. So I guess it does exactly what it's supposed to do.

VIDEO: Cee-Lo Green - "No One's Gonna Love You"

Cee-Lo did an amazing job covering my all-time favorite Band of Horses songs. "No One's Gonna Love You" will be on his forthcoming album Cee-Lo Green Is The Lady Killer, due August 9th. Check out the video below:

We Won't Be Seeing These Honda Commercials In The U.S....

I want to live in Australia, where they air car commercials that make fun of Hipsters with their Polaroid pix and summer scarves. Honda is essentially making fun of hipsters, who think they're individuals, by implying that you yourself will be an individual if you buy this car. I don't get it.

One thing I DO get though, is that the version "aimed" towards the "urban community" seems a little racist. Do people consider black commercial one racist and the hipster commercial funny? Are there enough black people living in Australia to get angry about this?

NEW: Wale Mixtape "More About Nothing"

The follow-up mixtape to the 2008 release "Mixtape About Noting" dropped today. I've always been a fan of mixtape Wale. I listened to his last mixtape way more than the album. Download the new "More About Nothing" here.
