LIVE: Detox Retox @ Rock & Roll Hotel

Detox Retox are tight. And I'm not talking overused 90's slang that your "cool" uncle uses. I mean these guys have got everything together on stage. I went into this show knowing little about the band and by the time they finished their set, I was begging for more. Singer Michael Parker and his classy, vintage, grandfatheresque sweater (I hope he has a rotating stock) led the 4-piece D.C. outfit through a 45 minute set that kept the crowd dancing and hands in the air the entire time. And the "encore" chant seemed never-ending as Detox Retox walked off stage. When it was clear the crowd wasn't stopping, Parker hit the stage to explain, "We'd love to play some more for you guys, but we don't know any more songs! Let's drink!" And the party continued, with the band being bombarded left and right from fans high-fiving and congratulating. Detox Retox bring a modern rock atmosphere, built for radio, and combine it with an upbeat personality that keeps you engaged the entire time. Listen to their entire EP Movement at their bandcamp. Check the photos below and hit the link for the entire album!

After listening to the stream over at NPR, I can easily say that this is the most infectious and well put together album Bright Eyes has ever put together. You can stream the entire album now through it's release date of February 15th over at NPR Music.

VIDEO: PS22 - "Round & Round"

The PS22 kids are back, this time covering Ariel Pink's "Round & Round" and I seriously love these students. They have such great attitudes towards all of these performances. And a huge thank you and congratulations should be sent to their teacher, who's helping to keep the arts alive in public schools and keeping kids excited. This person should win teacher of the year the way he interacts with these students and gets them to love singing. Check out the class Youtube page to view other performances by the class including "Lisztomania", "One Day" (my favorite), "Just Dance" and a ton of others.

VIDEO: Lykke Li - " I Follow Rivers"

Here's the video for the first single off Lykke Li's new album. It took me a couple listens to get into "I Follow Rivers", but now I can't get enough.

VIDEO: CREEP ft. Romy Madley Croft - "Days"

Is it a little obvious to call CREEP's video for "Days", um, creepy? Creepy abandoned mansion. Creepy blood dripping. Creepy people levitating. Yup, that sums it up.

I've been in love with this song since it first hit the http's. The xx's Romy Madley Croft's vocals add such a ghostly touch.

VIDEO: Cloud Nothings - "Should Have"

Cloud Nothings' self-titled debut album arrives today and it's one of the best new releases so far this year.

NEW: Yuck - "Coconut Bible"

Yuck's debut album will be released Feb. 15th and this song will NOT be included. It's a shame too, because it's really good. "Coconut Bible" is the b-side to the "Holing Out" 7 inch. Admittedly, I haven't listened to the entire album yet, but knowing that this song AND "Automatic" won't be included makes me a little sad.

Two-A-Days: Metal Mother and Florrie

Metal Mother is the musical project of Oakland-based singer-songwriter, Tara Tati. Her debut LP, Bonfire Diaries will be released March 7th, and is the follow-up to the EP In The Bones released on her own label. "Billy Cruz" definitely has a Lykke Li vibe to it, with a mixture of synthesizers and drums machines that form a trance-evoking foundation for Tati’s haunting vocals. You won't be able to listen to this one just once.

Metal Mother - "Billy Cruz"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

30 seconds into your first listen of Florrie's "Call of the Wild", you'll be asking yourself "why isn't this girl on top of the Hot 100 right now?" She's that good. The music is that catchy. Florrie gave everyone her own explanation as to why she isn't signed to a major label. She's toured with some of the U.K.'s biggest acts and been remixed by some of the best, so it's only a matter of time before Florrie makes the trip over to the U.S. and takes the radio by storm. Head over to her website to download her entire EP FO' FREE as well as a litany of other tracks and remixes!

VIDEO: Steven Tyler "Walk This Way" With Jimmy Fallon and The Roots

Steven Tyler stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to talk about his new American Idol position (who cares). More importantly, Tyler jumped on drums to begin "Walk This Way" and then received a little help from Fallon, Black Thought, and the rest of the Legendary Roots Crew. Great video, enjoy!

Check Ya Footnotes (Mixtape)

I saw this over at P&P and had to share. Check Ya Footnotes is a mixtape that makes all those connections to rap lyrics that you rap along to, but have no idea what they mean. Don't pretend you're innocent; we're all guilty of it. This mixtape blends well-known hip hop songs with the older songs they're referencing. It's a great concept and judging from my first listen, it's done well.

“Remember Rappin Duke, Da Ha Da Ha?” Do you? Do you really? Biggie did.

On Check Ya Footnotes, hip-hop heads will now be able to uncover the references embedded in some of rap’s most well known tracks. Put together by DJ Raize and spanning from 50 Cent to Patti Labelle, Eminem to 3rd Base, Check Ya Footnotes reveals the dopely interconnected world of classic hip-hop like no other project before it.

Coachella 2011 Lineup Announced

The lineup for the 3 day California festival has officially been released and it looks pretty stacked. If you could pick one day, which one would it be? I'm taking day 2 with Gayngs, YACHT, Joy Formidable, Cults, etc. Ahhhh but the other days look so good too!

VIDEO: James Blake - "The Wilhelm Scream" (Live)

James Blake has really been impressing me. He's made a solid transition from producer to artist and his self-titled debut album, due out February 7th, is extremely solid. He's also recently been voted #2 in the BBC Sound of 2011 poll. Watch "The Wilhelm Scream" below and visit BBC to watch other cuts from his performance.

VIDEO: Cee Lo Green SNL Performance

No matter where you see Cee Lo performing (and we saw him a lot last year) you have to stop and watch. Such a great stage presence and a voice that goes unmatched. The Soul Sensation stopped by SNL this past weekend to perform two tracks off The Lady Killer. Check out "Bigger Lights, Brighter City" and "Forget You" below.

NEW: Freelance Whales - "Day Off"

After hearing "Enzymes" and now their second Green Label Sound single, "Day Off", it's clear to see that Freelance Whales are heading in a different direction than where they left us with their debut full-length, Weathervanes. We've definitely seen a much richer and fuller sound coming from the band with these latest two songs. Listen/download below. Here's what GLS says about the new song:

Green Label Sound today releases, “Day Off,” its second exclusive single by New York City’s Freelance Whales. “Day Off” is the companion to the band’s previous single “Enzymes” – both of which head down the path of the band’s new, more mature and introspective direction. The band refers to the tracks as “twin siblings that don’t look too much alike.” Keyboardist/vocalist, Chuck Chris, who penned “Day Off,” describes them as “sounding a lot bigger and more live” than previous works. Lead singer Judah Dadone says that “Day Off” and “Enzymes” are “a deliberate reaction to road life. It’s about wanting to come home. It’s about trying to reclaim your own possessions and trying to reclaim the people in your life that you love.”

Two-A-Days: Edelweiss and BRONZE

What were you doing at 14 years old? I was more concerned with when my next Yoo-hoo fix was going to occur and when the first time I was going to see a naked girl would be. Not necessarily in that order. I was so ADD at 14, good luck getting me to sit down and listen to anything you had to say, let alone craft a band worthy of national attention. But that's exactly what the young guys in Edelweiss have accomplished. With the youngest member a tender 14 years old (on drums!) and the oldest clocking in at 17, Edelweiss have many years ahead of them, but it's already clear they've got some mature musical ability. Take a listen to the single (NO) below and hear traces of Two Door Cinema Club and Joy Division. Edelweiss won't remain unsigned for long.

Edelweiss - "(NO)"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRONZE are more along the lines of crafty veterans. Comprised of former members of Detachment Kit, formerly of French Kiss, BRONZE are giving away their self titled EP FO' FREE over at their bandcamp. The first track, "Horses" comes busting out of the gate with boisterous rock anthem intensity, then fades slowly into the MGMT-inspired electro jam "Deep Freeze". BRONZE definitely provide us with some musical diversity on this EP and every song is worth owning and repeating over and over again.

NEW: Beans - "Mellow You Out" Featuring Tunde Adebimpe

A little good news/bad news to sit and ponder while sipping our morning coffee. The bad news: A new TV On The Radio album is probably NOT going to be flowing out of our laptop speakers anytime soon. The good news: it's because we've got some great projects coming from the band's contributing members. Tunde Adebimpe does a guest spot on Beans' new song "Mellow You Out". This is the first time I've listened to anything from Beans and I'm definitely impressed. As for Tunde, I could listen to his unique style all day and never get tired.

NEW: Dom - "Bowl Cut" Featuring Cults!

Listen to "Bowl Cut" below and head to Dom's website to download a remix (FO' FREE) of the track by Passion Pit's Aislyn, who seem to turn every track into musical gold. Ezra Koening & The Black Keys Battle in a Sell-Off on Colbert

It was an indie rock sell-off last night on Stephen Colbert. Because Colbert won a Grammy last year for Best Comedy Album, he's now eligible to vote for this years awards. Well last night, he brought on The Black Keys and Ezra Koening of Vampire Weekend to clash over who should receive Colbert's coveted vote for Best Alternative Album. We've just witnessed the highlight of the Grammy Awards, and they aren't for another four weeks.

NEW: Kanye West & Jay-Z - "H.A.M."

Earlier today, Kanye and Jay-Z debuted the first single off their upcoming collaborative album, Watch The Throne. To be honest, Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is still too fresh in my memory and there's no way you can top it. So while this may in fact be a good track by the two artists, I don't see the song or album living up to expectations. Listen below and judge for yourself.

NEW: Foster The People - "Helena Beat"

Ever since Foster The People gifted "Pumped Up Kicks" to the world last summer, I've been patiently waiting for a second fix from the band. Well a brand new song, "Helena Beat" has seen the light of day and it's clear that "Pumped Up Kicks" was no fluke. These guys know how to write and produce insanely catchy songs. Both songs will be included on the band's debut EP, titled Pumped Up Kicks, due out January 25th.

Two-A-Days: Dylan Fox and the Wave and WOJCIK

I don't know much about Dylan Fox and the Wave. What I do know is they just released an EP on iTunes last week and I want them to set up shop in my living room next Saturday and sling back PBR's partying all night. The EP is titled Buzz, and you can pick it up now, or try it before you buy it over here. Solid blues rock that sounds like The White Stripes long lost b-sides. Through in a touch of Black Lips when these guys take the tempo up a notch and you've got a band that's ready to make a big impact this year. Keep an eye on Dylan Fox and the Wave!

"Warming my hands on the bridges I've burned." Now that's unapologetic! WOJCIK is comprised of Geoff Lewit and Hailey Wojcik of Brooklyn. Their debut EP, The [VOY-chek] EP, tells stories of relationships gone awry, and tells them extremely well. Like this is Joan Jett all over again! See for yourself by downloading the entire EP FO' FREE over at their bandcamp.

NEW: Justin Timberlake - "Take You Down"

A new Justin Timberlake demo has surfaced and it's a club hit! "Take You Down", produced by Neptunes, is exactly what you would expect from our generation's King of Pop. Although JT has made it abundantly clear that he is NOT interested in recording a new album anytime in the near future, it seems as though he might not be able to keep his voice away from the studio for too long....

Album Stream: The Decemberists - The King Is Dead

Happy New Year from The Whipping Post! Stream the new Decemberists album, The King Is Dead, in it's entirety over at NPR's website. The album is due out January 18th.

From NPR: On The King Is Dead, Meloy prepares listeners for change in his opening line: "Here we come to a turning of the season." It not only signals different lyrical themes, but also provides an introduction to a new musical lightness for The Decemberists. The new record opts to tame the band's indulgences, and also reroutes its musical focus: Instead of pointing solely to the British folk that has long inspired him, Meloy digs deep into the American roots-music lexicon.
