A Kick Ass Band With A Drummer Who Is Also The Lead Singer And Their Name Is Not Rush

I feel the need to share some of my favorite new music with you this Monday morning. Think drummer/lead singer. Think Alberta, Canada (the new hot spot for music). Think of an Autovaughn-esque sound. Yeah, it's pretty damn good. Parachute Penguin is the band I'm speaking of. This indie rock/new wave sounding three piece have only been around for a hot minute, but have already recorded a five song EP with enormous potential. Steve Virga's carefully crafted lead vocals soar above the music and Matt Kokotilo's guitar work is pop rock at it's finest. Light and airy, not overpowering, but kicking it up a notch when it's necessary. Not to be outdone, brother Jon Kokotilo's backing vocals are some of the best I've ever heard. Backup vocals often go unnoticed in bands, but Jon's stand out because of just how well they match up with Matt's lead. These guys are poised for a big breakout. It's just a matter of time before everyone knows who they are. Let's hope for a tour sometime soon from these guys as well as more music. Although, I could probably listen to this EP for the next year and never get tired of it.

Key Myspace Tracks: "Stray Bullets" "Death By Train"

Weekend Warriors

Ever have one of those weeks when you start rethinking your choices in life and wonder how you go to where you are now? That's my life every week. At least the weather is starting to cooperate. I witnessed my first mini skirt of the season on Tuesday, so things will surely be looking up from here on out. Let's take a look at the best of what Philly has to offer us this weekend.

Who's NOT playing a show this Friday? You have no excuse to stay inside tonight as there are so many shows to list, but I'll try to cut it down. Drink Up Buttercup headlines the Khyber, playing with Modern Skirts ( who i raved about previously) and Jukebox The Ghost at 9pm. Or go forth at get emo with your punk self at The Troc with Emery , Mayday Parade, and As Cities Burn. Two hooterific shows at two great venues, but I'm not even close to done for Friday. Current blog favorite Lightspeed Champion is playing upstairs at WCL and I'll be front and center with my friend Amstel, Miller will also be joining me later on, but he only likes to come around when I'm low on cash. Show's at 8pm and its FREE BITCHES. Still confused on where to walk your two cute feet tonight? Go see The Medium at North Star for some cookie cutter "my girlfriend loves this band" music. And for you hip hop headz, superman over to Rotunda and check out Reef The Lost Cauze. Check out his Gym Class Heroes remix on myspace.

Wow I'm already tired from all this Friday music, but Saturday is upon us and calling our names. Alright, Junior invites you to pull a double-dip session and head back out to The Khyber on Saturday at 9pm. Cheers Elephant says come to the venue with the worst setup in the world, The Fire. Or check out the band with just enough 60's retro rock to keep you dancing the jitterbug all night, Pink Spiders.

You know what Sunday's are good for. Mimosas and hangovers. Change your clock forward this weekend. I'll sex ya later.

4 hours until happy hour,
Josh

New Music For Your Ass

Madelyn is a pop/rock band from Florida and their song "Mind Over Me" has been stuck on repeat on my iPod for about a month now.

Throughout the past 2 years, Madelyn has written and recorded a full length album as well as their new four-song ep along with a new batch of tunes off their upcoming full length and landed opening slots for several national acts. Madelyn was also named MTVu's "Artist of the Week," and won the 2006 Vans Warped Tour "Battle of the Bands."

If you're looking for me to tell you who these guys sound like, I guess I would call "Mind Over Me" a good attempt at Innerpartysystem. Just a little lighter and feel-good. All I've heard is what's on Madelyn's Myspace page, but that's enough to intrigue me. I'll be keeping an eye on these guys. On a side note, I've been finding a ton of great music based in Florida recently and plan on sharing more in the coming weeks.

Keeping you dancing for at least another night,
Josh

Around The Way News

Hey Teens,

Kid Rock entered a plea deal for fight outside a Waffle House. This not to be mistaken with the fight Kid Rock had with himself to sell out and be a "country singer".

Van Halen has postponed a handful of tour dates due to Eddie Van Halen. He has a "Mystery Illness". Funny, I call it being drunk. I can't wait to "mystery Illness" dial people this weekend.

The new Gnarls Barkley video will not be shown on MTV (not yet). The strobe effects in the video may induce seizures. MTV had the same problem with Britney Spear's videos, back in the day, which made teenage boys spontaneously masturbate.

Fall Out Boy: Live

Fall Out Boy will be releasing a full length LIVE CD/DVD. Because everyone knows Fall Out Boy is known for their live performances.....and not in a good way.

Exactly.

Hey Teens

Sorry I've been MIA for a little while, but I was hitting up fashion shows in Paris with Kanye. .....Ok, actually I was just sick.

Thanks for all the e-mails wondering where I was.

Rolling Stone Finally Gets A Top 10 List Correct!

It only took what, 42 years for Rolling Stone to get something right? Congratulations, guys! The magazine that Adam likes to refer to as Gathering Moss instead of Rolling Stone polled readers on their favorite "color songs" and it looks like the people actually spoke. I agree entirely with these 10 songs, just not in the order they're in, but I'm not going to get into that. One step at a time guys. Here are the Top 10 Color Songs as voted by Rolling Stone readers.

10. Prince- Purple Rain

9. Bob Dylan- Tangled Up In Blue

8. Led Zeppelin- Black Dog

7. New Order- Blue Monday

6. Jefferson Airplane- White Rabbit

5. The Beatles- Yellow Submarine (couldn't post online)
4. Jimi Hendrix- Purple Haze

3. The Clash- White Riot

2. AC/DC- Back In Black

1. The Rolling Stones- Paint It Black

Any ideas on what else could have made this list?

Gnarls 2nd Single

?uestlove posted a video on his youtube of what will be Gnarls Barkley's second single, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" The anticipation of The Odd Couple is killing me. The album might save the industry this year. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse never cease to amaze me.

Also, because I was a bum this weekend and never got around to posting it, here's the video for the first single "Run". I'm sure you've seen it by now.

Already going to hell just pumpin' that gas,
Josh

SXSW Radio

Spin has created an online radio station dedicated to the artists performing at this years SXSW. So if you're like me and missing out on the festivities, this helps a little. It's mostly just the big name acts on the station (White Rabbits, Black Keys, The Raveonettes) but every once in a while they play some great stuff from relatively unknown bands.

Listen to the radio station here.
