Local Natives Release Debut Album Today

"Oh to see it with my own eyes"

The first song off Gorilla Manor, debut album from L.A. based Local Natives, reads like the innocent quest for self-knowledge of a band on the brink of stardom. Throughout the entire album, Local Natives never lose sight of the pleasures of being a youthful rock band.

Production is spot-on with euphoric three part harmonies, precise percussion and rustic vocals. After many listens though, "Airplanes" remains my favorite. A fantastic tribute to one of the bandmember's pilot grandfathers that evoke such vivid images of a life well-lived. Smack in the middle of the LP is "Warning Sign", a Talking Heads cover. Not exactly an easy band to cover, but Local Natives hold their own. It's not necessarily a better track than the original, but the sheer fact of taking on a band of that stature on your debut album shows some balls. The second half of the album dials down a little bit, introducing more strings and harmonies. The unsure lines in "Who Knows, Who Cares" (is my life about to change, who knows who cares?) plays nicely with the piano and string arrangement, until cymbals flare and an all out breakdown occurs in an all out eruption of music.
