Indie Bands '08

Philly Weekly came out with it's Biggest Indie Bands of '08 story this week. Of the bands featured, my two favorites, both of which I've posted about on this blog before, are War On Drugs and Drink Up Buttercup. Read our earlier post on WOD here.

Can't wait for the Drink Up official release! Wasn't it us who predicted they'd blow up like K-Fed's parenting skillz?

Looks like people are finally starting to jump on the War on Drugs bandwagon, noticing that the band really does encompass some sort of potential. Their headlining spot at the Khyber is sure to draw a decent size crowd. Like I mentioned back in July (when nobody seemed to want to listen to me), these guys are a great live show. Some of the tangents they go on leave you memorized, while the Dylan-esque vocals keep you wanting more. Want to hear something all too similar to War on Drugs (as well as a failed attempt at today's artist development)? Check out the old Hockey stuff.

I won't be around to check out any bands this weekend, so I'm leaving you all in the dark. Baltimore is calling my name, luring me to the inner harbor for the Red Sox-Orioles series. Way too much drinking and harassment will be flowing in and out of this New-England boys mouth this weekend. Love that dirty water....let's go Sox!

War On Drugs @ JB's

So I checked out local Philly band The War On Drugs last night at Johnny Brenda's, aka the best music venue in Philly. They played about a 30 minute set to a crowd of around 30 people. It's hard for any Philly opener to drag people out of their apartments on a Tuesday night and I was surprised to see that many. They started the set with just two members on stage (well, the floor space in front of the stage as there was no room on the actual stage). "Taking The Farm" was by far their strongest during this opening set. The other three members then joined in to finish their 30 minutes. I was immediately caught off guard by the two drummers and really don't see a need for two, but hey whatever floats your boat. With all five members on stage, the best I can describe them is Vietnam meets Hockey. They have the ordered chaos that Vietnam utilizes so well paired with the lyrical content and vocal range of the singer in hockey. They're definitely worth giving a listen and even checking out live if you're in the minority of people who like to explore new music in this city. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes on these guys. As far as a second show goes to see The War On Drugs? Count me in.
